Zambia

Zambia is an unsung hero in Southern Africa. This remarkable land does not receive as much attention as its neighbors because it is a quiet and introspective land. A place of amazing beauty, the nation stretches west to east from Victoria Falls and the headwaters of the Zambezi River to Lake Tanganyika and the Eastern Highlands. Its culture is fascinating, and its natural attractions are among the best in the world.

So why is Zambia not as well known as some of its neighbors? Because it has been peaceful for decades. While its neighbors have struggled with war and strife, Zambia has been and remains a peaceful land. It secured its independence without war or uprising in 1964. In 1991 and again in 2009, the country saw two peaceful transitions of power from ruling political parties to their then-opposition rivals. Zambia has also had a long history of welcoming refugees displaced by neighboring conflicts. While Zambia has its fair share of challenges, its peaceful and tolerant continence is an accomplishment that other countries would do well to emulate.

My years living in Zambia left a profound impression on me. It is one of the few places in the world that truly shaped who I am. Zambia will forever be in my heart. While I cannot say that a short visit will change your life, I highly recommend immersing yourself in this intriguing place. Go beyond the edge of Victoria Falls and see what lies beyond — in the real Africa. It’s no surprise that the famous missionary and explorer David Livingstone literally left his heart in Zambia when he passed away. I left my heart in Zambia too.
